12-year-old Builds Home From Trash!
2.26.09
The PBS series, Design Squad, sponsored a ‘Trash-to-Treasure’ competition to see what kids could invent with some regular, old garbage. Well, 12-year-old Max Wallack, blew everyone away with his ‘home dome:’ a geodesic dome constructed of plastic, wire and packing peanuts the purpose of which is to provide shelter for homeless people or disaster victims. Wow!
When he was six, Max won another invention contest that took him to Chicago. While there, he saw homeless people living on the streets and under freeway overpasses. He says he felt very sorry for them and felt obligated to find a way to help. His invention gives the homeless easy-to-assemble shelter.
In addition to a tremendous sense of accomplishment, Max won $10,000, a Dell laptop, a trip to Boston, and heaps of praise. But Max says, “I don’t really care about the money. I care about helping people.” You’re our hero, Max!!!

Oops! Forgot my Line!
2.25.09
Miley Cyrus forgot a line from a new song she was singing, Fly On The Wall, during a live TV performance on Saturday night. She had flown to London on a private jet to perform on the British primetime show Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway.
Yikes! It might be remembered as her most embarrassing moment when the Hannah Montana star briefly stopped singing during the performance after botching the lyrics. When she was finished singing the song, she mouthed to one of the dancers: "Oh my God, I forgot my lines!" Well, we forgive you, Miley. You’re only human! These things happen! You still rock!

JoBros Thrill Fans at Premiere!
2.25.09
Pop stars spectacular, Kevin, Joe and Nick, attended the long-awaited premiere of their rockumentary ‘Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience’ last night at the famed El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. JoBros fans lined up around the block for hours in anticipation of the movie’s first official screening featuring a behind-the-scenes look at the thrilling threesome’s life on the Burnin’ Up tour. Crowds cheered as the three brothers hit the red carpet. “This is huge for us. We’re blown away…The fans are showing up in huge numbers,” Nick commented.
The whole Jonas family was there to proudly support their boys. Even adorable little brother, 8-year-old Frankie, turned out!

Mall Cop Apprehends Caffeine Abuser!
2.24.09
True Story! A 19-year-old man grabbed a person’s laptop computer at a Starbucks in Bradenton, Florida after being denied the opportunity to check his Facebook account. The man then ran out of the coffee shop with the computer! Two people in the parking lot tackled him to the ground and held him there until a mall security guard arrived on the scene. The laptop was returned to its rightful owner and the man was charged with robbery by sudden snatching, which is a felony. Geez, Louise! Couldn’t you wait until you got home? Go to the library! And only chamomile tea for you from now on!

Disney's First Black Princess!
2.19.09
Tony Award-winning actress and singer Anika Noni Rose takes on her most regal role yet: the voice of Princess Tiana in Disney's upcoming The Princess and the Frog. She will be Disney’s first animated black princess.
"This feels amazing," Anika, 36, said of the honor. She is enjoying her newfound role as "Princess of America." In The Princess and the Frog, set in New Orleans, Tiana's mother is voiced by Oprah Winfrey.
Anika was born in Bloomfield, Connecticut on September 6, 1972. She caught the acting bug in high school and went on to major in Theatre in college and study drama at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco. In 2004, she won the prestigious Tony Award (the Oscar for theatre productions) for her performance in Caroline, or Change on Broadway. In 2006 she starred in the film Dreamgirls with Beyoncé Knowles, Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx, and Eddie Murphy.
Disney's multicultural royalty includes Mulan from China, Pocahontas, who is Native American, Belle from France and Jasmine from the Middle East. Congrats, Anika!

Rachel Bilson & Hayden Christensen Engaged!

2.18.09
Rachel Bilson and her longtime boyfriend, Hayden Christensen, got engaged over the holidays, according to a friend of the actress.
"They're so excited," says the gal pal. "They're a great couple. Rachel seems thrilled beyond belief."
Rachel grew up in a showbiz family who encouraged her to act. After making appearances in Buffy The Vampire Slayer and 8 Simple Rules, Bilson snagged the part of Summer Roberts on the hit “TeenV” show The O.C. (For 3 years she dated costar Adam Brody). Bilson then starred with Zach Braff in The Last Kiss and later opposite current fiancé Hayden Christensen in the thriller Jumper.
Hayden, whose acting credits date back to 1993 when he was only 12 years old, may be best known for his role as Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars Episodes II and III. Both actors will be 28 this year. No wedding date has been set yet.

3rd Grade Hero Guides Pregnant Mom to Safety!
2.18.09
A Pennsylvania boy, Felix Pepin Jr., and his pregnant mother were driving home from a prenatal check up when Felix’s mom’s blood sugar levels dropped dangerously low and she said she couldn’t see anything. Knowing she was diabetic and fearing the car was going to crash, he was terrified. But he did what he knew he had to: he guided her calmly though traffic for a mile and a half until she could safely pull over. “Go left here, go right here. There’s a STOP sign.” Felix gave her instructions to drive through busy intersections, traffic and pedestrians! Later when mom came to, the ambulance driver said, “your son is a hero.” She couldn’t remember everything that had happened, but Mom later gave birth to a healthy baby boy on Valentine’s Day! Big Brother Felix’s act of maturity and courage may have saved all of their lives. Congratulations, Felix!!
Hayden & Milo Break Up
2.17.09
Heroes stars Milo Ventimiglia, 31, and Hayden Panettiere, 19, have ended their relationship. The two spent the better part of 2007 trying to keep their relationship on the down-low. They are still on good terms, however, which is pretty heroic considering how some break ups go!
It seems Hayden may have a new hero. She was seen out on the town in Hollywood a few days ago getting cozy with 21-year-old singer Jesse McCartney so she must have licked her wounds fairly quickly. Maybe it has something to do with those regenerative healing powers she possesses on the show!

Kelly Clarkson Meets Girl Scouts
2.17.09
“No girl is perfect.” Kelly talked with a group of about 20 pre-teen Girl Scouts who were in Nashville, TN on Feb. 11 for a self-esteem workshop sponsored by Dove. "Just to let you know everyone in the magazines is Photoshopped!” Even Beyoncé! She emphasizes, “We're all human!”
Since becoming an American Idol champion 7 years ago she’s been getting feedback about her appearance and has been criticized for her physical “imperfections.” She says it’s just part of being in the public eye. (With a voice like that, how could anyone be criticizing?!)
She says she's seen celebrity friends “melt down” because "there is a lot of pressure." But the 26-year-old singer, whose album All I Ever Wanted is due out March 10, says she's come to terms with it. Go Kelly! She is beautiful AND talented and a great role model for all of us! We love you!

Burned Koala is Saved!
2.13.09
Here’s a happy story from Down Under. Although Australia is suffering from some devastating wildfires much like the ones that recently swept through southern California consuming thousands of acres, destroying homes and threatening lives, there is a silver lining. Australian firefighter David Tree found a koala bear limping through a burned area northeast of Melbourne with badly scorched paws. He approached her and realized she was eager to receive help. She drank water from his water bottle and as she drank she grabbed David’s hand. “I’ll never forget that,” he said. The water is credited for saving the dehydrated koala’s life. Sam, as they have been calling her, is recovering in a shelter and doing quite well.

Leonardo DeCaprio Wins Green Award
2.13.09
Super hottie Leonardo DiCaprio recently took a trip to Berlin, Germany where he was met by a cheering crowd of people waving for his autograph. He was there to attend Berlin’s Cinema for Peace Awards where he won the International Green Film Award – the first of its kind - for his work on The 11th Hour. He created and produced the documentary with partners in addition to narrating it. The 2008 film focuses on potential solutions to global warming.
In his acceptance speech, he mentioned that as a teenager he had visited his grandparents in the divided Berlin a year before the wall fell. Leo called Berlin a “forward-thinking city” and the “center of Europe.” He's gorgeous, gutsy and green. We LOVE this guy!!!!

Emma Roberts Cleans Up!
2.12.09
Actress Emma Roberts will be making a splash as the new face and voice of Neutrogena. "I'm so excited to be a part of a brand that I have always loved and believed in," says Emma. Neutrogena said Tuesday it signed Roberts as “brand ambassador.” It was also her 18th birthday. What a great b-day present! Emma joins fellow actresses Diane Lane, Jennifer Garner, Vanessa Hudgens and Hayden Panettiere who have also represented Neutrogena.
In addition to roles in Aquamarine and Spymate, Emma starred in the movie Nancy Drew and on the Nickelodeon series “Unfabulous” and currently stars in the film “Hotel for Dogs” in theaters now. Happy Birthday, Emma!

Sasha & Malia Do Camp David!
2.12.09
It’s the first family’s first trip to Camp David and according to the president they all had fun. Accompanying President Obama were his wife Michelle, daughters Sasha and Malia, a friend of Sasha’s and friend of Michelle’s and her two kids. "The girls just had a great time. They had a lot of fun," Obama told reporters. "You can see during the summer it's going to be a nice place to spend a lot of time." 10-year-old Malia and 7-year-old Sasha will have tons of new adventures for the next 4 to 8 years as they grow up in the center of American politics. But what we really want to know is, do they read Kewl Magazine??
Camp David has been a secluded and peaceful getaway for presidents and their families for generations. It’s a great place for the first family to get out of the spotlight and relax. The compound consists of several cabins hidden throughout the woods, connected by a series of walking paths. The cabins are all named after different trees, plants, and flowers.

Real-life Tomb Raiders Unbury Mummy!
2.11.09
Archaeologists have discovered a well-preserved mummy that has survived for 25 centuries(!) deep in a burial chamber in the Egyptian desert south of Cairo! It is very rare to find such an intact burial site because thieves used to scour these areas searching for treasures such as the gold amulets often buried with the dead - hence the term “tomb raider!” It was believed that it helped with the journey into the afterlife to have objects of wealth placed in the sarcophagus – an ancient Egyptian coffin made of mortar.
The underground room where the mummy was found was evidently built using a tunnel connected to another burial chamber. Wow! Imagine: 2500 years underground. Talk about a journey to the center of the earth! Some archaeologists believe that only about 30% of Egypt’s artifacts have been discovered which leaves approximately another 70% unearthed!
Mandy Moore Engaged!
2.11.09
Singer/actress/designer Mandy Moore is engaged to her singer-songwriter boyfriend, Ryan Adams, according to a close friend of Mandy's. 24-year old Mandy and 34-year old Ryan have been on again-off again since last March. They were spotted this week in L.A. grocery shopping together and Mandy was sporting a ring on her engagement finger!
Mandy was reunited with ex-boyfriend DJ AM after he survived a plane crash with Travis Barker in September. But they called it quits again in December. Shortly after, Mandy was back with her now-fiancé, Ryan, formerly of the alternative country band Whiskeytown. Congratulations!
Mandy also recently announced that after almost 3 years her clothing line, Mblem, is folding so she can focus on her music career. She is releasing Amanda Leigh, a California ’70s-inspired pop album on May 26. We’re excited to hear her latest music and find out more about her upcoming wedding!

Jonas Girl Nabs Big Part!

2.10.09
Joe Jonas’ main squeeze Camilla Belle has nabbed the lead part in “Mary, Mother of Christ.” This is no light comedy! For anyone who has ever played the role of Mary, it has always been a challenge and will no doubt cause an uproar when it’s released.
The producer Mary Aloe says, “This is a part of Mary's life that has never been shown on the big screen before.” It follows Mary's childhood, young love, and her role as a new mother and the difficulties of dealing with the mean king Herod. It is a story of real female empowerment. You go, girl! MGM will release in spring 2010.

Mi-lor and Dem-ena Hang Out!
2.10.09
After teen music sensations Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus brought down the house with a duet of Swift’s single “Fifteen” from her smash album Fearless, they hit the town with friends Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato, meeting up at L.A.’s popular comedy nightclub, The Improv. The occasion was the premiere party for Demi’s Disney Channel comedy Sonny with a Chance about a Midwestern girl who wins a national talent search and goes to L.A. to star in a hit TV series. The four girls laughed and cheered for their friend as they watched the first episode and devoured a plate of French fries. At the end of the show the BFFs gave Demi a standing ovation.

Twilight Gives Thumbs Up to Taylor!
2.9.09
Good news! Taylor Lautner is returning to the Twilight series! After what seems like months of indecision, the powers that be have finally decided that sweet and lovable Taylor has what it takes after all to transform himself into Jacob Black for the sequel to Twilight, New Moon.
New Moon takes place years later so the charcater of Jacob is supposed to be older, stronger looking and most importantly the kind of man that Bella can fall in love with, creating a love triangle between Jacob, Bella and Edward. Producers felt that Taylor was too young and possibly not physically right to continue in the role.
However, Taylor has changed their minds. Since the day Twilight stopped filming, he has been working out. By Christmas he had already put on about 20 additional pounds and he's been working hard on gaining another 10 before filming begins on New Moon in a few more weeks.
The film's release date is set for the end of November!

GRAMMY Highlights
2.9.09
Thankfully most of the people we really wanted to see perform, did it early enough so that it wasn't past anyone's bedtime. Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus did an awesome job all by themselves, no backup singers, or gospel choirs, no band or dancers, just the two of them singing about what they really didn't know when they were 15 years old.

Of course, one of the highlights was the performance by the Jonas Brothers and Stevie Wonder of the JoBro song "Burning Up". The JoBros not only looked but were full of energy and Joe skillfully pounded on the conga drums, which was quite a treat.

Katy Perry wore an interesting outfit, complete with all kinds of fruit, for her performance of "Kissed A Girl". She bounced all around the stage and kept running around yet still managed to have the breath control to finish off the song with gusto.
Carrie Underwood showed off a lot of leg during her performance of Last Name, for which she also won a Grammy. Looks like she's been working out, just a bit!

One of the standout performances was Jennifer Hudson who was backed up by an award winning Gospel Choir. Not did she amaze everyone with her voice with a technically difficult song, but she the emotion she brought to the song, caused her to shed a few tears at the very end. She received a standing ovation as well as the Grammy for Best R&B Album.
Here is a partial listing of some of the bigger awards from the night. For a complete list, go to the GRAMMY site!

2.7.09
You'll be humming along in not time to V Factory's "Love Struck". The band sounds incredibly delish in this fun yet heart tugging, danceable ditty. Get it now on iTunes!
MEET THE BOYS!
If you don't know the boys yet, let us just tell you that Asher Book, Wesley Quinn, Nick Teti, Jared Murillo and Nathaniel Flatt are more than just eye candy! They are super talented, incredibly down-to-earth and a great mix of personalities. Jared, the soft-spoken 20-year-old from Mapleton, UT, is known to some as Mr Ashley Tisdale (yes, they're dating!) but he's also been a featured dancer in all of the HSM movies, as well as the national tour. Wesley Quinn, from Greenville, SC, is 19 and known as the baby of the group. 25-year-old Philadelphia, PA, native Nick Teti, known as Nicky T, got his start doing musical theater in high school then taught himself to dance while in college. Nathaniel Flatt, 27, from Cookeville, TN, acted in local plays before finding his way into musical theater. Asher Book is a charismatic 20-year-old from Arlington, VA, who got his big break at an open casting call for the theatrical production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Cast in the principal role of Chip the Teacup, Asher traveled the U.S. on tour with the show for 2 1/2 years - playing the character for longer than any other actor in the show’s touring history.
BUT THE BIG NEWS IS...
Asher was recently cast in the reinvention of the 1980 Oscar-winning motion picture Fame, which hits theaters in September 2009. (FYI, this movie also stars Anna Maria Perez de Tagle and Kay Panabaker!) and Book is no stranger to the story because growing up, he actually went to the New York's Fame High School of Performing Arts (now called the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts).

We Love Isla!
2.5.09
She's Hollywood's newest "it" girl and star of the upcoming romantic comedy "Confessions of a Shopaholic". The film's red carpet premiere took place last night in New York City at the Ziegfield Theatre. You might remember Isla as the crazy and wild, red-headed sister of Rachel McAdams in "The Wedding Crashers" or maybe you caught her as the mystery "mom" of Abigail Breslin in "Definitely, Maybe". However if you don't know her yet, you're going to love this adorable, bubbly and funny girl. She's a mix of Reese Witherspoon and Amy Adams and you're going to love her in this role that seems tailor made for her, just like her Prada shoes!

Mylor at the Grammys!

2.5.09
No, we haven’t gone completely off our heads – but you will! When you find out that Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift will be singing TOGETHER at the Grammys Sunday night!!! This first ever performance of the two ex-Jonas babes, (At least it wasn’t the same one!) will be just one of the watch-worthy moments planned for the show. If you manage to tune in, you’ll also get to see the Jonas Brothers themselves (busy week guys!), Estelle, Kanye, Adele, Chris Brown, Sugarland, Kid Rock, U2, Rihanna, Robert Plant with Alison Krauss, Coldplay, Jennifer Hudson, Kenny Chesney, Katy Perry, Radiohead, T.I. Carrie Underwood, Justin Timberlake, Paul McCartney, Jay-Z and Lil Wayne, plus a tribute to the classic soul group The Four Tops with Duke Fakir (original member!) Jamie Foxx and Ne-Yo…doesn’t that leave us one Top short?!? The show airs this Sunday, February 8th @ 8pm on CBS!

Bonus Jonas!

2.5.09
And we’re not talking about little brother Frankie! We’re talking about more chances to get Jonas’d this month! On February 10th, the JoBro will be hosting the CW Tuesday night teen line-up of “90210” and “Privileged”! On the 12th, they’ll be there for their own unveiling in wax at Madame Tussaud’s in NYC, and will stay on to perform their Valentine to you on Saturday Night Live on February 14th. The excitement mounts as they release the soundtrack to their new movie on February 24th and show up at their star studded celebrity premiere at the El Capitain Theatre in Hollywood, and finally the big day will be here: The opening day of their movie “Jonas Brothers: The 3d Concert Experience”!!! For such a short month, February certainly will be packing in the Jonas this year! Are you prepared?
Jonas SNL Valentine
2.4.09
There will be something special for you from the Jonas Brothers for Valentine’s Day! And you thought they didn’t care!!! It seems that now EVERYONE cares about the Jonas Brothers! Even the grown-ups who run Saturday Night Live! On the air for 38 years (that’s before some of your parents were born!!!), the show’s weekly musical guests are usually of the indie, avant garde variety…but it looks like things may be changing! Is it because they think they want teenage girls watching SNL? We’re guessing not – the show doesn’t air until 11:30 in most time zones, with musical guests usually appearing after midnight. Our guess is that the Jonas Brothers music is crossing over. Either way, you’ll either be prying your eyelids open to stay up late enough to see them, or you’ll be waking up uber-early to watch the replay! Hey! We know you! If you happen to be in NYC around that time, you’ll want to catch the unveiling of their effigies (that means ‘likenesses’) in wax at the New York Madame Tussaud’s on February 12th. The guys will be in town for both events, and if you’re lucky, maybe a fan sighting or two! Yoo hoo! Boys!
Demi’s Sonny Opening

2.4.09
As the premiere approaches, all sorts of bits and bobs from Demi Lovato’s new Disney Channel show “Sonny With a Chance” are cropping up all over the internet. On the show’s own YouTube channel you can watch the new and amazing opening credits – we can’t get enough of them! – featuring the show’s theme song, “So Far, So Great” sung by Demi herself, and quick cameos of the entire cast of crazies that you’ll soon be letting into your living rooms! Check out the amazing animation and effects – and all just for the opening of a show! They must really like you guys over there! In other opening news, there’s a ton of worthy music choices out there as of yesterday for ya’ll to drool over: The “Spectacular” Soundtrack with Gerard Nolan Funk, Tammin Sursok, Victoria Justice and Simon Curtis, and V Factory’s new single “Love Struck”. Also on the horizon is a new album from Corbin Bleu! There’s some exclusive video with Corbin talking it up at on his MySpace channel, so get your parents permission and check it out!
Dev Subs for Jesse
2.3.09
In a surprising casting switch, heartthrob singer Jesse McCartney will no longer be playing the role of Zuko in “Avatar: The Last Airbender”! His upcoming music tour got in the way of his attending boot camp, which is not only necessary when working on a film with a lot of martial arts in it, but is also a tradition for all of director M. Knight Shyamalan’s films. Instead, the role is being taken over by “Slumdog Millionaire” start Dev Patel. The director saw him in the movie, and once he knew he had an opening, he knew he wanted Dev to take over the role. It’s too bad we won’t be seeing more of Jesse on the big screen, but more of Dev is an alright trade off! The movie won’t be released until July of 2010, but that’s alright too: It sounds more futuristic!
Tony Oller’s Norway

2.3.09
Yeah, it sounds like a travel show on PBS, but it’s not! It’s a kewl new project that Tony (As the Bell Rings) is working on musically in Norway. We’re not sure why, exactly…maybe he’s even more popular there? He’s just come back from recording some new songs and a video while he was there, and you can check it all out on his MySpace channel here. (Ask your parents, but Tony’s mom gave us this link, so we’re pretty sure it’s kewl!) Going to Europe would be kewl, but when Tony goes there, he doesn’t have a minute to rest! It’s all about getting in studio and filming time, and then back on the plane to the US! There’s clearly more to come from this cute, hard-working and super-talented guy – hopefully we won’t have to keep going to Europe to get more of it!!!
Who Won the Super Bowl?

2.2.09
Silly readers! We don’t mean which team! That one’s easy…unless you were one of the wise few who take advantage of the people-free day by going out and doing something else! If you’re one of those, we’ll help you take part in discussions today: The Steelers won, as expected, for the record making 6th time! Pretty good, Stillahs! (That’s how they say it in Pittsburgh!) Back to what we really mean – namely which was the best Super Bowl Ad?!? Our faves were Conan O’Brien’s ad for Budweiser, the Pedigree dog adoption ad, the Careerbuilder.com ad, and Jack getting hit by a bus. We know: we’re sick for liking that one, but really, we started crying we laughed so hard! Check in on the KEWLblog to let us know which one you liked best! It could be one of the ones we like, or a whole different one – let us know!
Punxsutawney Phil
2.2.09
This little guy was up earlier than any of us today…unless you happen to live in Punxsutawny, Pennsylvania! Hey, it’s kind of a big couple of days for PA, isn’t it? First the Super Bowl, and then Ground Hog Day. Sure, Ground Hog Day happens everywhere, but in the town of Punxsutawny, the OFFICIAL ground hog – Phil – is the one who gets out of his burrow, and simply by casting a shadow, or not, tells us how much longer the winter will last. Based on an old German folkway, if Phil sees his shadow, winter will last another 6 weeks (which is about a week shy of the official start of spring). If he doesn’t see his shadow, spring will come early. Every year, over 10,000 people gather on Gobbler’s Knob to celebrate this occasion, usually staying up all night, though no one bother’s to check if Phil was right or wrong six weeks later. But, hey! Why ruin a perfectly good mid-winter celebration with science?!? The people of Punxsutawny have been celebrating this day since 1887, and the Ground Hog Club - who take care of Phil and translate for him during the ceremony (!) – all wear tuxedos and top hats to keep things dignified. Our question is, isn’t Phil supposed to be asleep? After all, ground hogs hibernate and it IS winter! At least there’s somebody who has a harder time waking up than we do!
