Acne Troubles
Hi guys!
Our advice columnist, Cassie Scerbo, found a great question and she forwarded it along, including her great response for us to use in the beauty column. It's some great advice, so we've reprinted it below! Enjoy!
Hey Cassie,
I breakout like once a month... and for a long time my acne won’t leave...it usually does...what can I do to clear my face a little bit?
Thnx, Tasha
Dear Tasha,
It sounds like you have hormonal acne (don’t freak out on me guys!), and it’s super normal. Every day with a zit is an eternity, I know, so a long time could be as little as five or six days. I’m sure you’re trying different acne medicines from the drugstore, but very little will stop the break-out itself. But there are some general acne tips you can try before you go to a doctor (which is never a bad idea!).
1. Keep it clean – Wash your face with a gentle cleanser morning and evening to get dirt and oil off of your skin. Also, if you exercise enough to sweat, it’s a good idea to at least rinse off your face if you can’t do the whole shower thing.
2. Keep your hands away from your face – That super attractive (!) habit of holding up your head with your hands in class is just helping all the dirt from everything you touch get mashed into the pores on your face.
3. Keep your hair off of your face – Your hair has natural oils, and when your face is extra oily, it probably doesn’t need any help from your hair. Goes double for playing with your hair!
4. Drink plenty of water – Water helps the body to flush out impurities, and that includes every part of your body, including your skin.
5. Try not to pick or pop – This is the toughest one of all, but if they don’t release really easily, then all that pressure just pushes the gunk further into other cells in your skin, spreading it and making wounds in your skin that now have to heal as well!
If the combo of all this, plus spot treatments doesn’t make it at least a little better, you might want to check with your parents or a doctor about trying other medications or treatments. Your case doesn’t sound too bad, so here’s to good survival of those ‘spotty’ days!
